in whose heart are the highways

Dec 2 | Posted by: Ryan Internicola |

Just a little reflection on the psalm that Susanna and i read this morning:

"How blessed in the man whose strength is in You,

In whose heart are the highways..." Psalm 84:5.

Its a blessing to have no strength in yourself. That may sound like a curse, but its not. If your strength is in yourself, then it is up to you to make things happen. Seems to me that when we choose our own "strength" (which is no strength at all) Jesus often lets us. My buddy made an analogy of driving in a car with Jesus. Whenever we think we could do a better job driving, Jesus pulls over, gets out and swaps seats with us without hesitation. He lets us experience what we think we want. Well, if you have ever opperated in your own strength, then you know that eventually you realize it sucks! It is a blessing to have no strength in self. It is a blessing to have all our strength stored in Christ.

"In whose heart are the highways..." Some Bible editors have added "to Zion" but those words are not present in the orignal language. Jesus Christ is the Truth, the Life and the Way. Everyone can come to the Father through Him. He is our path, our highway. With Christ alive in your heart, you have an access road to the Father. Sometimes we look externally for pathways to God. Its easy to think that we need the right environment, the right music, the right people... to connect with God; but it's not true. The highways are in our hearts. I'm a worship leader and i am tellling you: you don't need me to get to God! The highway is in your heart. The best i can do is to walk that road myself, sing about it, call you to it, and pray that you join me. I can help you remember, i can offer a hand to lift you up if your legs have given out on you; but i cannot create a highway between you and God. The highway is in your heart and the highway is Christ.

Where do you need to go? Surely, there is some place you need to get to. Some point of destination, some point of destiny. The highway to get there will not be found externally. Not in a ministry, not in a person, not in the right connections. The highway to get where you need to go is in your heart. The highway is Christ. Walk with Him. You'll get "there". Be warned though, His idea of "there" is often quite different than ours and He is way more about the journey than the destination.
