it may sound like a cuss word, but it's not. it's worship.
participatory.
I have been noticing a shift in worship away from the observational and towards the participatory. Thank God.
I feel like the participation of the people in worship has been limited to a very small set of options. You can raise your hands, dance around, wave flags, sing. Maybe you go to an edgy church where you can paint, or roll on the floor groaning, or sit quietly and read or write without too much suspicion. I really can't think of much else. I'm starting to see some changes, but, i guess it's really nothing "new".
"What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification." 1 Corinthians 14:26
At some of the meetings i've been leading, the people have been encouraged to share things that God is showing them during worship. Practically speaking, there has been an "open" microphone for people to come and share a scripture, a mental image, an encouraging word, a prayer, even a bit of song. Leaders have taken time and care to encourage people to do this, to let them know that it is safe and even eagerly welcomed. And you know what? People are DOING IT!
As a "worship leader" i have SO enjoyed these experiences. The things shared by the people actually shift the course of the worship meeting. I am getting valuable cues on where to lead by what the Spirit speaks through His people. I am learning that i do not have to initiate everything. I am not the only leader. I am not the only one who can hear from God during worship and share something that will benefit the group. Everyone has a part to play. No one's part is better or more important. I think the Father smiles to see all of His children active and involved in loving on Him through worship.
I am very glad that the spectator sport formerly known as "worship" is on the way out, and the new wave of participatory worship is on the rise!
